By far and large the greatest challenge our team (Group 3) faced for this project was finding a suitable documentary subject that fit our time frame.
Our first choice was to find a narrative about kimzua- paper offerings for the dead. We wished to interview two young owners of a kimzua store. However, this store was managed outside of their full-time jobs. Furthermore, this assignment coincided with the Qing Ming festival, or Tomb Sweeping Festival, where paper offerings are high in demand. Our interviews had to be rescheduled multiple times and still did not come to fruition.
It was drawing close to the date our first cut was due, and we still didn’t have a confirmed opportunity to film their story. Hence, we had to make a swift decision and come up with a new script for a different story.
Other interviewees included an actor that practiced Silat, and a conservationist-cum-theatre practitioner. However, their schedules did not fit our timeline as well. We finally found a subject with a groupmate’s brother. He was en route to becoming a national soccer player until an accident shattered his dreams.
While we faced multiple setbacks, and had a late start as compared to the rest of the groups, the team became more determined to create a good documentary with a strong narrative. We're excited to show you our work in the coming week, and hope you'll enjoy it!
