Hey guys! Were you curious to find out more about the production
of our documentary after our previous blog post? We’re here to share more with
you!
First off, we chose the topic on traditional kuehs as we
wanted to explore deeper into our overarching theme of cultures and heritage.
With our Voxpops dealing with dialects and our news featurette focusing on Chinese
culture and celebration, our final production for this semester will explore
the topic of traditional food – Nyonya kueh.
Delicious kuehs on display
During our interview, we faced a couple of difficulties as we carried out the interview outdoors, right outside the kueh shop. We did not cordon off the area, so there were quite a number of curious passers-by who walked into our camera frame and made eye-contact with the camera. Hence, they were captured into our A-rolls and we had to re-film some of them. The A-rolls that contained important snippets of information were salvaged by overlaying the footage with B-rolls.
After the filming session on the 2nd of April, we headed down to the V-suite as a group to begin editing. Over the course of editing, we realised that although we had multiple B-rolls, they were all related to kueh-preparation and lacked variety despite us filming over 80 footages. Therefore, we went back to the shop to film the main protagonist, Mdm Chong, in action. We captured moments of her smiling and interacting with her customers, which were very useful for our documentary as it complemented her interview.
Editing our documentary in the V-suite
As we returned to the shop thrice, we felt apologetic
towards Mdm Chong, but she was very friendly and accommodating. She even offered
us food each time we dropped by. We’re really thankful to meet Mdm Chong during
this journey of creating our documentary.
A final group photo from us with our much-needed caffeine boost as we work on our last lap of editing!
Alas, it is the end of our journey. It has been a fruitful and adventurous semester with this module and our team has been exposed to a holistic experience of filming with the help of our peers and advisors. Moving forward, we hope to take this invaluable skill set that we have gained to our future workplace and more.
With love,
Group 5
