Hey guys! Group 5 is back with another video, but this time
it is a documentary!
Continuing the theme of Chinese culture and
heritage, we decided to create a documentary about traditional Nyonya kuehs. We
managed to contact Mdm Chong, a passionate and talented woman who owns a kueh
shop in Bukit Batok called 'Tasty Handmade Nyonya Kueh & Desserts' (also known
as 品香手工娘惹糕點甜品 in
Mandarin), and she will be the protagonist of our documentary.
We filmed B-rolls on the 30th of March
from 3am to 6am. The moment we stepped into Mdm Chong’s shop, we immediately
perked up and almost forgot our exhaustion from the lack of sleep. The
crackling of the cooking oil and the aroma of freshly cooked food was enough to
wake anyone up. We got down to business and ran about filming the kueh
preparation and cooking process using two different cameras, the Canon EOS 550D
and Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4. We also recorded audio with the Zoom H6. It was
certainly a GOOD Friday, as we had a very scrumptious breakfast of carrot cake,
chee cheong fun and chwee kueh.
Mind
your head! We had to slip under the shutters to enter the shop at 3am.
Our breakfast of chee cheong fan and chwee kueh! Yummy!

We filmed our interviewees (Mdm Chong, her
daughter, and her mother-in-law) on the 2nd of April from 1pm to
6pm. This time, we used the same two cameras (Canon EOS 550D, Panasonic Lumix
DMC-GH4) and a DJI Mavic Pro drone to film them, as well as two Zooms (Zoom H5
and H6) to record the audio. It was such a hot day that we bought an average of
two drinks each to quench our thirst during the shoot 😂. Unfortunately, we also had to retake a
couple of shots due to loud background noises that somehow interrupted us every
few minutes, from the squeaking wheels of a trolley, to the clanging of keys.
Flying our trusty (and expensive) drone to take the
perfect shot.
Although the filming process was tedious and
extremely tiring, we are grateful for Mdm Chong’s kindness in allowing us to
film her and her family. We absolutely cannot wait to show you our documentary.
We promise that you will go hungry once you view our video, so stay tuned!
