Short Documentary: Behind-the-Scenes: Jaze Phua

Amazed,  by Jaze.

Hey everyone, it's Group 2 again!

Following our previous blog post, Jasmine and May headed down to Grand Park City Hall Hotel on 16 April, Monday to film more b-rolls of Jaze on an actual production set. He was filming for a Toggle series, Dead Lucky.

Jaze was the Production Designer on the set

While we were there, we witnessed some action scenes and stuns. It was a fascinating experience!

It was a thrilling experience being on an actual set itself. The staff were professional and moved in a very fast pace. There was so much to learn from them!

While this was going on, Pei Fang, Shi Yi, Raphael and Xin Han were piecing up the structure in the visualisation suite.

Not an uncommon sight: Shi Yi and Pei Fang glued to the screen

While there were 4 of us and 1 screen, we took turns patching up the structure and worked around each other's energy. There were always at least 2 pair of eyes looking at the screen at one point in time. Closer to the deadline, we decided to split up the work on different computers. While May and Xin Han were doing subtitling, Jasmine was doing the colour corrections, Shi Yi and Pei Fang were editing the pacing and sound, and Raphael was overlooking the whole process and picking out points that could be improved on. It was certainly synergistic!

One of our pain points was fixing up the audio. We were interviewing outdoors, which was heavily affected by the different activities going on around the industrial area. To fix this, we had to use Adobe Audition and manually reduce the background noise for each sound clip.

Another pain point was color grading. There were several cameras used, and despite using the same settings on each camera,  the colours and focus was still different from what was expected, resulting in more work post-production. Also, some angles were not usable because they were too grainy even after correcting the visuals.

As we reach the end of our journey, we want to express our gratitude to each individual who have lent us support one way or another. Thank you Nick and Kai En for the mentorship and tips. Thank you Jen for the equipment and patience. Thank you Jaze's dad for being so open and welcome to us. Thank you Jerry and Jordan for taking time off to be interviewed. Thank you Toggle crew for being accommodating . Last but not least, thank you Jaze for being ever so patient and caring to us, and being so helpful throughout our production. We are immensely thankful for everyone who has lent us support in our journey.

Jaze and Group 2, now & forever!

Thanks for the long wait! So here's the short film featuring our protagonist, Jaze Phua! Enjoy! :D
