Unconventional Career Paths in Singapore


In recent years, the local job market has evolved in various ways due to technological advancements and Singaporeans’ changing perceptions. While new jobs emerge, other jobs are slowly becoming obsolete or displaced by machines. As university students who are stepping into the workforce in a few years’ time, we are keen to find out the ongoing trends and requirements of the current labour market.

During the research phase, we noticed that many are open to less conventional job opportunities like gymnastics coach, tattoo artist or even being a mermaid!


Though these jobs are perceived as less stable and conventional, the younger generation of Singapore is unafraid to take up the challenge, as passion and job fulfilment are seen as more crucial factors in deciding career paths in this day and age. Contrary to popular belief, Singaporean parents are also more open to the idea of their children taking up non-desk-bound jobs.





We shot with the Panasonic Lumix GH4 as the main camera, mostly for the frontal shots. We also had a secondary camera, the Canon 80D, for the side angles and b-rolls. To fit the theme of our news featurette, we chose to film our host at Raffles Place with a backdrop of the CBD buildings. We went to great extent to film b-rolls and capture interview footage. The interviews generally went well, though we did encounter some hiccups with the how the audio sounded. We have thus derived that the place of filming is of optimal importance. To obtain the best sound, the location should not be too empty, nor too crowded.
