Top 3 Challenges when filming a Featurette on Migration

Our team (Group 3, AY17/18 Sem 2) did a featurette on the topic of migration. Filming this proved to be a feat, here’s our top 3 challenges in filming this featurette!

1. “Public” Property
In filming our intro and outro, we found issues in getting the right shot with the proper permission, especially in areas that were presumably public. While framing a shot along the Singapore River, we were informed that we needed filming permission from The Central, a mall along the river, even though the mall was not featured in the frame.

Since we were running short on time, the team decided to move down the river, and found a quiet corner overlooking the iconic bumboats, which added a lovely touch to the scene.

2. B-Rolls
Filming enough B-rolls for our featurette proved to be difficult due to our chosen topic. Since our narrative was based on why people choose to migrate, the team had to improvise on proper B-rolls that matched interviewees’ answers. However, it was easier to produce B-rolls for the interview with our subject expert.

3. Audio Recording
Initially, we did not understand why the volume was so soft until we found out the audio was suppressed with the -20 toggle. While we are now more confident in using the ZOOM for audio, we are still learning to ensure the sound is regulated by being more meticulous in recording.

So here's our featurette! We hope you enjoy it (: Check out our Facebook page too, SHOOT.
