Leaping Over Boundaries: A Wrap-Up

The production of our short documentary, Leaping Over Boundaries, took place over one month, with shots filmed around Malik Mazlan’s makeshift studio in Kampung Glam and his calligraphy class at Chinatown. We interviewed Malik himself, as well as his mentor and guide, Master Calligrapher Mr Yong Cheong Thye.

The main difference between this short documentary and our previous videos was that we were detailing the life of one particular person, instead of gathering multiple voices to illustrate a wider issue. We had to adjust the pace of the video accordingly, to tell a slow and poignant story. We used a wider range of aesthetic shots and angles, to create a sense of atmosphere and highlight the historical beauty of the surrounding area. We were fortunate that Malik was very accommodating and very eager to share his story, and so were his mentor and classmates.

This short documentary went more smoothly than anticipated, thanks to our accumulated experience with the equipment and software. We were greatly inspired by Malik’s artistic journey and optimistic attitude, and we hope you will be too.

It’s been a great journey with the group and the rest of the class. We would like to thank Nick and Raksha for all of their guidance in this module, and the people who've helped us out in our videos, one way or another. We wish you guys all the best!
