For
starters, the term ‘freegan’ may still be unfamiliar to some, including
ourselves but following Daniel Tay for the past weeks, has definitely taught us
a lot about freeganism and what it stood for. According to the dictionary, a
freegan is someone who “rejects consumerism and seeks to help the
environment by reducing waste, especially by retrieving and using discarded
food and other goods”.
On
Saturday, 2nd November 2017, the team (Group 4: Alifah, Elgyn,
Francisca, Juliana, Melissa Jen and Melissa Tam) started filming for our short
documentary. On the first day, we were able to follow him to a cranberry
giveaway where he was giving away expired cranberry juice to 1000 migrant
workers. This was followed by a trip to the AWARE Market at Dover, where the
freegan community was cooking food using rescued vegetables which they also
gave to members of the public for free.
The most
interesting shoot for that day was definitely filming for dumpster diving where
we met him at Little India at 11pm. It was definitely a new experience
especially when we had to film while letting him continue with his normal
activities, keeping the footages as authentic as possible. As there were a lot
of moving involved, we also had to rely on simply the zoom and the camera
itself to capture the audio. Furthermore, we also had to follow some house rules of filming Daniel during the dumspter diving session so as to not impinge on any laws. Even so, while it was tiring to film the whole
day, the experience that we benefited from it was definitely worth it.
The
following week, we were able to schedule a proper interview with him in his ‘freegan
room’ where he told us that almost everything in the room were all retrieved
from the dumpster. Although we had a lot of questions prepared for the
interview, he was very responsive and was willing to share personal stories
with us, making the footages that we got very casual and intimate. He shared a
lot about the stigma on freeganism as well as interesting finds from doing
dumpster diving. We can’t wait for you to see our documentary on Daniel, a very
passionate individual who would be bringing the viewers on a freegan ride with
him in the film!
