Too often, we are carried away with the fast pace of life
that we don’t realise the things that we are missing out. This is why sometimes
we need a little push or a gentle reminder to slow down and think about what’s
going on around us to realise that there are certain things that we have taken
for granted. The Face of The Day (FOTD) serves to be that gentle reminder for
everyone.
Started on the 1st of August 2017, FOTD is a collaborative
visual dialogue created by fashion designer and self-proclaimed flaneur, Mr
Yang Derong, and his team. Through this passion project, he aims to “make
people think, ask questions, challenge their conventional thoughts or just
silly things that make them laugh”.
Mr Yang dresses up as different characters such as Medusa,
Donald Trump and Chang’e with the help of make-up, wigs and costumes to address
different issues, be it social, political or historical, or simply just for
laughs. Each face is photographed and uploaded on social media such as
Instagram, Facebook and the FOTD website to send a message everyday to address
different issues in a light-heartening manner.
Links to articles about the topic and/or issue that the FOTD is trying to raise awareness on are attached to each visual dialogue. Although a picture paints a thousand words, Mr Yang encourages the public to look beyond the surface. “If you don’t read the captions or the further readings, it could just be a glorified selfie”.
Despite being new to social media and having a much smaller
team of collaborators than what he was used to, it does not hinder Mr Yang from
working towards the goal of creating 369 faces. You may wonder: Why 369 faces?
According to Mr Yang, it’s the perfect 3x3 Instagram grid. This shows how much
consideration goes behind the FOTD project whereby even the smallest details
such as the Instagram grid are not neglected.
