Inspired by this year’s National Day Rally topic, our featurette focused on the demands that preschool teachers face in Singapore!
We interviewed two preschool teachers, Ms Angie and Ms Doris, Professor Ho, an NUS sociology professor, and Grace, a parent of a preschooler. We were happy to have worked with such friendly interviewees! We attended lessons at the preschools and had a tour around Ms Tan's house to film our b-rolls.
Filming during a lesson at Hi-5 House of Learning
We had a total of 6 days of filming, using different cameras (Panasonic GH4, Canon 550D, Canon 760D) as we were unable to procure the same camera for the entire production. Initially, we used the boom mic to record our interviews, but eventually switched to the lapel mic for better audio recording.
Sound was a huge challenge, as we were inexperienced with the boom mic. The audio quality initially was much lower than we expected. We decided to re-record the preschool teachers for better audio, and fortunately they agreed to our request. We also learned how to edit the audio using Audacity during post-production. While not perfect, we feel that the audio was much better than our first cut.
Filming during preschoolers' play time
Based on our responses, we learnt about the different expectations parents have on their children’s preschool education. Therefore, our featurette highlights how preschools have to modify their curriculum to strike a balance between study and play.
In Ms Doris’s words, “Let them take their time and dream.”
